Xavier Duval: We Would Like That The Wearing Of Masks Outdoors In Mauritius Is No Longer Mandatory As From April (2022)

The members of l’Espoir have held a press conference this Saturday 26th March at the Hotel le Suffren, Port-Louis. The alliance of the Platform call for the easing of health restrictions concerning the Covid-19 pandemic as from April 2022. Xavier-Luc Duval, the Leader of the Opposition, has proposed a lifting of the obligation to wear a mask outdoors. He has also suggested a revision of the limit of persons allowed at gatherings as well as the holding of municipal elections.

We would like that the wearing of masks outdoors in Mauritius is no longer mandatory as from April (2022). Of course, those, who wish to do so, will still be able to wear a mask, and it will remain mandatory inside. Similarly, for indoor gatherings with masks and social distancing, we want the 50-person limit to be extended to 200 people. Following the holding of regional elections in Rodrigues during the Covid-19 pandemic, we demand that municipal elections be held as soon as possible,” says Xavier-Luc Duval.

The leader of the MMM, Paul Berenger has commented on an amendment made by the British Government on the demands of British Passports by the Chagossians.  As explained by Berenger, it was only the natives, who were expelled from the island and the first generation after them had the ability to ask for a British passport. Now, with this new amendment, any Chagossian as from 18 years and above can ask for a British Passport.

Paul Berenger seized the opportunity to re-engage himself to the Chagossians that L’Espoir will give a helping hand to all Chagossians who are willing to go back and reconstruct their island with the help of the government. He also commented on the oil issue of last week.

The leader of the Reform Party, Roshi Bhadain commented on a report published by the World Bank, namely ‘The Systematic Country Diagnostic Report’ stating that in terms of debt, Mauritius has become unsustainable. With a debt number of 101% gross domestic product today, which might climb to 106% by June 2022 and to 120% by 2023.

He also commented on the failure to be in the ability to meets the needs in term of consumption products in the upcoming months.
