White Mountain Crime – Third Suspect Arrested

Investigators from the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) arrested a third suspect on Friday, May 13, in connection with the murder of Devnarainsing Shiblall, a 54 year old farmer at his home in Montagne-Blanche on Friday, May 6.

Jean Jacques Kennedy Carly, a 42 year old resident of Riambel, was actively sought. The suspect had been sentenced by the Assize Court on Thursday 26 November 2015 to serve a 13-year prison term for the murder of Armon Moothien in Riambel. The man was killed during a burglary on Thursday 11 April 2013. Having committed various crimes in the South, Jacques Carly fled his village. He was on the prowl across the island and was wanted by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Southern Division.

It was around 11pm on the evening of Friday 13 May that Jacques Carly was arrested in Port Louis. On Saturday morning, 14 May, he was brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port Louis where he was charged with a provisional murder. This Monday morning, 16 May, he will be brought before the court in Flacq.

Warren Duijeet, a notorious 39 year old recidivist and Jean Brandon Westino Marguerite, 22 years old and known to the police, were arrested on Monday 9 May. The two men confessed to killing the victim during a burglary in which a television set was stolen. They had incriminated Jacques Carly as their accomplice in this case.

In the wake of the police investigation into the case, three suspects, including a 19-year-old girl, all drug addicts, were arrested first. They are accused of taking money from the victim.
