Vaccination Rate: Mauritius At Par With Advanced Economies

Must Read

As Mauritius battles against a resurgence of COVID-19 with 70% of its population fully vaccinated and a total of 1.8 million doses administered, Sub-Saharan Africa is losing the vaccination race with only 4% of its population vaccinated as of November 15. Only five sub-Saharan African countries reached the World Health Organization’s target of vaccinating 10 percent of the people by the end of September. Only a few countries in the region are expected to reach the target set by the World Health Organization to vaccinate 40% of the population in all countries by the end of 2021. Mauritius is one of them.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the lack of vaccines weighs the region’s growth outlook, contributing to the dangerous divergence with advanced economies. Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to be the world’s slowest-growing region in 2021, with a permanent lower path of real GDP that could have long-lasting social and political stability consequences.

As of now, data published by the IMF shows that Mauritius’s performance regarding its fully vaccinated population puts it at par with advanced economies where the average fully vaccinated population nears 70%.
