US Provides Ukraine With Air Defence System; Warns Putin Of ‘Catastrophic’ Consequences Over Use Of Nuclear Weapons In Ukraine

Must Read

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday said that Ukraine had received sophisticated air defence systems from the United States. The president had acknowledge receiving the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) from USA in an interview.

“We absolutely need the United States to show leadership and give Ukraine the air defence systems. I want to thank President (Joe) Biden for a positive decision that has been already made,” Zelenskiy said, according to an English-language transcript of the interview”, Zelenskiy said.

“But believe me, it’s not even nearly enough to cover the civilian infrastructure, schools, hospitals, universities, homes of Ukrainians.” He added.

As Washington approved the shipment to Ukraine, which it was long asking for to provide a counteroffensive to Moscow, Zelenskiy thanked the United States for High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and other multiple rocket-launching systems equipping Ukraine to advance against Russian occupying forces.

The president emphasized called for the urgency to make a ‘positive’ environment for Ukrainians to settle here. “We need the security in order to attract our Ukrainians to come back home. If it’s safe, they will come, settle, work here and will pay taxes and then we won’t have a deficit of $5 billion in our budget. So it will be a positive for everybody,” the president said.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky had underlined the need for international help to Ukraine to move at the same rate as Ukrainian forces.

US fresh warning to Russia

Continuing its criticism of Russian attack on Ukraine, the United States gave a warning regarding “catastrophic consequences” in case Moscow uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Sunday that the US would respond decisively to any Russian use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine, and that it had spelled out to Moscow the “catastrophic consequences” it would face.

“If Russia crosses this line, there will be catastrophic consequences for Russia. The United States will respond decisively,” Sullivan told in a press programme.

Recently, Russian foreign minister Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov said regions holding referendums, which are widely-criticized in and outside Ukraine, would get full protection in case of Moscow’s annexation. A referendum is a direct vote by the electorate on a proposal, law, or political issue.

As a message to Kyiv and its Western backers, Moscow may depict attempts to recover the four regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia as attacks on Russia itself by merging them into its territory. For the record, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave nuclear threats to the West in response to what Russia calls ‘West’s nuclear blackmail’.
