Truck Driver From Mon Desir, Vacoas Arrested For Growing Cannabis

Information was provided to the men of the Chief Inspector, Rajcoomar Seewoo of the Special Intelligence Cell (SIC) of the Special Supporting Unit (SSU), that Jagnarain Padaruth, a 45 year old truck driver living in the area of Mon Desir, Vacoas is involved in drug trafficking. After hours of surveillance, these police officers raided the man’s home in the late afternoon of Friday 3 February. The information turned out to be true. Seventy-five cannabis plants, a quantity of the same drug, two electronic scales and a sum of Rs 9,250 suspected to be from the sale of this drug were seized. The market value of the drug is Rs 320,000.

The SSU SIC searched the tin house of Jagnarain Padaruth at around 5pm on Friday, February 3. In front of this house the police found thirty-two green raffia bags filled with wet soil and manure, each containing a green plant, and forty-three plastic containers in which cannabis plants had been grown. These plants are between 10 cm and 1.85 m tall.

When asked about the presence of these plants Jagnarain Padaruth had to say, “piye gandia sa missie, mo mem kinn plant sa pou mo fime ek enn parti mo vande ek parataz avek mo bann kamouad. In a wooden cupboard in his room the police found a glass container in which there was a quantity of cannabis, two electronic scales and a sum of Rs 9250. This is suspected to be from the sale of the drug.

In the drawer of the same cupboard, the police found one hundred and forty resealable bags in an envelope. They suspected that they were going to be used to store drugs.

Jagnarain Padaruth spent a first night in a cell in the Vacoas detention centre. This Saturday morning, 4 February, he was brought before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) in Port Louis on a provisional charge of cultivation of cannabis.
