Tourism Sector: Adaptation Strategies To The New Normal

Some 75 Small and Medium Enterprises evolving in the tourism sector, were awarded certificates, on wednesday afternoon, during a ceremony organised by SME Mauritius in collaboration with the Inbound Tourism Promoters Association, and held at Le Suffren Hotel & Marina, Port-Louis. The Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah, was present.

The recipients have followed training on different modules pertaining to the forthcoming resumption of tourism activities with the opening of the borders on 01 October 2021 as well as adaptation strategies to the new normal. The training was carried out at Rose Belle, Bel Air, and Goodlands from 17 to 20 August 2021.

In his address, Minister Bholah recalled that the tourism sector, which is one of the main economic pillars of the country, has been badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and added that the sector globally has registered a decrease of 74% in the year 2020 with the drop in tourist arrivals. He further pointed out that the majority of operators in this sector are SMEs with less than 50 employees. He also reiterated Government’s support to the SMEs operating in the tourism industry with the implementation of several measures to revamp the sector.

Minister Bholah further spoke about the measures being adopted to control the spread of the COVID-19, especially through vaccination, which have eventually eased with the opening of the borders scheduled in October 2021. He also dwelt on the need to inculcate new skills for the SMEs in the tourism sector so as to help them adapt to the new normal and for a speedy recovery of the businesses which have been greatly affected by the pandemic.

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of SME Mauritius, Mr Ravin Rampersad, underlined the importance of the training programme which aims to prepare the various stakeholders operating in the different areas of the tourism sector in the advent of the opening of the borders.

He also called upon other SMEs to take advantage of this initiative. He highlighted the contribution of the tourism sector to the economy adding that it accounts for around 22% of the Gross Domestic Product. He concluded by reiterating the continuous support of SME Mauritius to the small entrepreneurs.
