The case was heard by the Supreme Court on Monday 21 August. The State, represented by Chief State Attorney Verna Nirsimloo, opposed the application by the former President of the Republic. The same applies to the other co-defendants in the case, namely the Attorney General and the members of the Commission of Inquiry. The case has been adjourned to 4 September.
As a reminder, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim is seeking leave to apply to the King’s Privy Council after her application for judicial review was rejected by the Supreme Court. She wants to challenge the damning conclusions of the Commission of enquiry chaired by former Chief Justice Asraf Caunhye. This body was set up by the government following her decision, when she was President of the Republic, to appoint a commission of enquiry into the Platinium Card affair.
