Sustainable Tourism Mauritius Awards 2022 Launched

Must Read

The Tourism Authority will launch the first ever Sustainable Tourism Mauritius Awards 2022, one of the flagship events of the tourism sector. It is a token of recognition to individuals and companies who have invested heavily in the preservation of our heritage, be it environmental, social, economic or cultural.

Its director, Lindsay Morvan explains that this organization has been piloting the “Sustainable Island Mauritius (SIM)” project since July 2018. This project is funded up to 90% by the European Union through Switch Africa Green and the remaining 10% by the “Tourism Authority”, which also ensures the coordination and implementation of it. He recalls that the SIM aims to accompany tourism operators in the process of greening their operations through training, workshops and co-creation, networking and development of tools to ensure that the recommended criteria are met.

Through the SIM project, and with the contribution of all our industry partners, we are multiplying our efforts to position Mauritius as a green destination that embraces the best practices of sustainable tourism.

Those who want to compete for the Sustainable Tourism Mauritius Awards 2022, must be active in the industry in the following five categories: Accommodation, Tour Operators and Tour Guide, Boatmen, Handicrafts and Local Production and SMEs. This last category also includes cab drivers, small structures such as tables d’hôtes, attractions, parks and restaurants, among others.

Moreover, Lindsay Morvan specifies that the operators of Rodrigues can also register for this competition. And taking advantage of the opportunity, he recalls that within the framework of the SIM project, the Tourism Authority has signed an MoU with the Regional Assembly of Rodrigues and that we have already provided training to more than 600 Rodrigues tourism operators.

Invited to speak about the jury, the director of the Tourism Authority underlines that it will be composed of people who evolve in the different fields of the tourism sector and will be chaired by Dr. R. Nunkoo, head of the department of “Tourism Management” at the University of Mauritius.
