Sherry Singh Case: The DPP Will Continue To Represent CP

Magistrate Nitisha Seebaluck delivered her ruling on Tuesday in the Sherry Singh case. The ruling concerns the disagreement between the offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Commissioner of Police over the latter’s decision to retain private counsel. The DPP’s representative disagreed with the decision. He argued that any lawyer wishing to appear for the prosecution must have the authorisation of the DPP. He won the case. “The DPP has exclusive powers over prosecutions, ” magistrate Nitisha Seebaluck wrote. She added that any lawyer wishing to appear for the prosecution must have the authorisation of the DPP. As a result, the DPP’s office will continue to represent CP in the Sherry Singh case.
