Seychelles Celebrates 45th Independence Quietly

June 29 marks the 45th independence anniversary of the Republic of Seychelles from the British occupation. A National day event that will not be pompously celebrated due to Covid 19 precautionary measures.

Short, simple and strictly official. This is to what will be the 45th anniversary. The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m at the State House in Victoria, Mahé, in the presence of all the members of the government, ambassadors and all members constituting the diplomatic community for the President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan’s speech to the nation. It is intended to have at least 4 platoons of 15 fifteen people each to commemorate this special flag raising day for the Republic of Seychelles, bidding farewell to the Union Jack.

Once ‘carnavalesque’

Seychelles used to be one of the Republics that gave its national day its glory. Parades comprising of numerous platoons from the Military, Police, Fire and Rescue Services, Seychelles National Youth Council, Young Citizens and Scouts, the inhabitants’ platoons and without mention of International one from China, India, France, Britain, Reunion, Mauritius amongst friendly countries they share close diplomatic and economic ties. The celebrations were also marked by a number of musicals, dance and other artistic performances by local and international talents, breathtaking fireworks session and other different cultural attractions on the street’s parks, and beaches…

The world will miss this so colourful ‘carnavalesque’ event. But Seychelles calls to understanding towards this Covid 19 era. Seychelles is nearing its goal of getting the whole population inoculated, including expats and foreign workers. To date, more than 70,000 inhabitants out of the 98,000 Seychellois have received two doses of Sinopharm, Sputnik and Covishield.
