A raid by police officers from the Casernes Centrales Special Striking Team (SST) took place on Tuesday morning, September 26, at the home of a resident of Lecornu, Sainte Croix. One hundred and sixty-four grams of methamphetamine were found, with an estimated street value of Rs 2,460,000 million, and Yann Axel Mardaymootoo, a 20-year-old painter, was arrested.
It was shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday September 26 that the men of the SST, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Ashik Jagai, arrived at Axel Mardaymootoo’s home. This was after they received information that this young suspect was involved in drug trafficking. SST officers were supported in this operation by elements of the Groupement de la Police Mauricienne (GIPM) and the Special Supporting Unit (SSU). These officers were on the scene of the raid, as well as in front of the suspect’s home, to prepare for any eventuality. At around 9.50 a.m., the search uncovered a clear plastic bag in a cupboard in the suspect’s bedroom, containing crystal methamphetamine.
News of this SST search in the neighborhood spread like wildfire, with curious onlookers turning out to witness the scene on rue Lecornu, Sainte-Croix. Axel Mardaymootoo was arrested and taken to the SST office at headquarters in the Casernes Centrales.
Axel Mardaymootoo will be brought before the Port-Louis court on Wednesday September 27. He is facing a provisional charge of drug trafficking.
