His appeal has been rejected. The businessman Rafiq Peermamode, convicted for bribery on 11 March 2016 by the intermediate court, will have to serve an 18-month sentence. This conviction followed a lawsuit brought against him by the ICAC. Rafiq Peermamode was accused of having demanded a bribe of one million euros from Anil Nemchand, PRO of the Bel Air Sugar Estate, on 1 March 2006. This was to help him obtain a lease on geometric steps by using his influence with Asraf Dulull, the then Minister of Land. He was also accused of having demanded Rs 50 million from the same Anil Nemchand on 23 March 2006. Rafiq Peermamode had appealed against his conviction. But on Wednesday, Senior Puisne Judge Nirmala Devat and Justice Raatna Seetohul-Toolsee dismissed his appeal and upheld the 18-month jail term. Asraf Dulull was cleared after an ICAC investigation.
