The activities, organised last year, comprised a painting competition on the theme Let’s Stop littering and Dumping to help our planet get better for students of Grades 5 and 6 and a competition focusing on Environmental Education for students of Grade 10.

In his address, Minister Ramano congratulated the participants for demonstrating their talents on environment which remains a topic of paramount importance to the community. The objective, he stated, was to encourage students to deliberate on environmental and sustainable development issues such as global warming, climate change, green energy and biodiversity.

He deplored the fact that some citizens continue to litter and dump waste into the environmental landscape adding that the Government spends a lot of money on waste management. It is important that children right from an early age be familiarised with global environmental crisis so that they are better equipped to face the challenges of climate change, he added.

Minister Ramano indicated that some 2,715 submissions from primary schools and 28 submissions from secondary schools were received by the Ministry, which according to him, show the willingness of parents and teachers to encourage the children to be creative and expressive in topics such as environmental degradation and protection.

To this end, he informed that more such activities will be organised to awaken the interest of students in environmental issues so that they become responsible citizens of tomorrow.
