The Head of Government recalled the major milestones that marked the evolution of air services between Mauritius and Rodrigues, provided by the national airline, since its inaugural flight on September 13, 1972 to date.
Mr. Pravind Jugnauth stressed that Air Mauritius has played a leading role in the development of Rodrigues and for the well-being of its people. This service has allowed the development of local tourism and several other economic activities, he said. It has also provided emergency services such as medical evacuations and facilitated better communication between our two islands.
The Prime Minister recalled the crucial role of Air Mauritius during the Covid-19 crisis in ensuring the delivery of medicines, vaccines and medical equipment as well as the transport of medical personnel. The airline also operated several repatriation flights to the island.
The Air Mauritius network allows Rodriguans to be connected to the world with services to Europe, Asia and the region.
Mr. Pravind Jugnauth mentioned important upcoming developments in Rodrigues’ air connectivity, including the extension of the Plaine Corail airstrip.
This development, he stressed, will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, which will bring new life to the tourism sector and the economy of the island in general.
With the additional capacity expected in terms of air cargo, Rodriguan companies will be able to export more fresh products.
Beyond the economic and commercial benefits, Air Mauritius brings the people of Rodrigues and Mauritius closer together, said the Prime Minister.
