Tottenham launched its season perfectly on Saturday with a big win against Southampton (4-1), on the first day of the Premier League, but it will take a few weeks before optimism spreads through the ranks of Spurs. Spurs won their first three league games last season under the short tenure of Nuno Espirito Santo without conceding a goal before suffering three consecutive defeats. The first day of the season also saw Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest (2-0) and Leeds beat Wolverhampton (2-1).
Liverpool could not do better than a draw at Fulham (2-2) on Saturday for their first game in the Premier League. The Reds were pushed around by a determined team and were twice led by Mitrovic’s goals (32nd, 72nd). But the summer’s star recruit, Nuñez, entered in the second half, made the difference by equalizing with a beautiful backheel (64th) before offering the second goal to Salah (80th). A disappointing scoreline but ultimately flattering for the European and English runner-up.
A timid but successful start for Chelsea. On the first day of the Premier League, the London club won 1-0 against Everton. In lack of inspiration for the first game of the recruits Koulibaly and Sterling, the London club took advantage of a penalty converted by Jorginho (45th+9) to win.
