Pravind Jugnauth: The Country Cannot Afford Another Lockdown

The Prime Minister was answering a parliamentary question from MP Reza Uteem on the resurgence of Covid-19 cases. “For socioeconomic reasons, we cannot afford another lockdown”, said Pravind Jugnauth. Thus, he added, there won’t be a third lockdown. The Prime Minister also recalled that the borders will reopen in two days under certain conditions.

Following another PQ from Reza Uteem, Pravind Jugnauth revealed that the authorities had received 104 974 applications for a Special Work Access Permit during the last lockdown. 59 457 were issued after review by a committee. In addition, 3 special permits were also issued.

The Prime Minister also indicated that so far, 600 000 people have received a dose of one of the vaccines against Covid.

The Prime Minister also stated that the authorities are working on the sanitary conditions to enable people living in red zones to make the sacrifice on Eid-ul-Adha. Abraham’s sacrifice will be celebrated on 21 July.
