Police Officer In Critical Condition After Shooting Himself In The Head

A 33-year-old police officer with nine years of service in the police force was placed on life support at the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis late Friday afternoon, March 24. This was after he tried to kill himself with a bullet to the head with his service weapon. This father of a family living in Chébel, Beau Bassin was working at the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA) in Cassis where he was performing an armed service. It is in the toilets of the ground floor of this building that he tried to put an end to his life with his service weapon, a Webley and Scott revolver.

It was following a request to the Operations’ Room of the Metropolitan Police of the South Division at about 6:22 p.m., that a team of police officers from the Central Barracks Police Station led by Inspector Soobul went to the NLTA office. The officer was found lying in a pool of blood in the toilet. The Central Barracks police officer was still breathing, but was unconscious with his gun on his stomach.

An ambulance from the Service d’Aide Médicale d’Urgence (Samu) was called to the scene to transport him to the hospital. His revolver loaded with four bullets and an empty shell were seized for the investigation. His communication radio, cell phone, a pair of glasses, his police cap, his pants, a belt, a holster for his revolver, a pair of police shoes and a toonfa stick were seized as evidence. The police also found on him the sum of Rs 131.

Forensic technicians and the ballistics expert from the Forensic Science Laboratory were also called to the scene. The scene was examined under the supervision of Chief Inspectors Daby and Sungkur.

The victim was admitted to the neuro ward of the intensive care unit of Dr. Jeetoo Hospital. She was placed on artificial respiration. Her prognosis is vital. An investigation has been opened to clarify the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
