Navin Ramgoolam held a press conference on Friday afternoon. He commented on the incidents which took place in Parliament on Tuesday 3rd August. He denounced the way Sooroojdev Phokeer insulted Rajesh Bhagwan. According to him, the Speaker was clearly referring to Bhagwan’s illness. “The Speaker of the National Assembly is a disgrace to the country. He uttered this phrase 11 times. This is totally unacceptable, disgusting and revolting that this is the level of parliament in Mauritius,” Ramgoolam said.
For him, Sooroojdev Phokeer has crossed a red line. “He dishonours Parliament,” added the leader of the Labour party. For him, the insult is not only to Rajesh Bhagwan but to all people suffering from vitiligo that Sooroojdev Phokeer must apologise.
He added that he cannot blame the Seychelles president for saying that their parliament is more civilised than ours.
Navin Ramgoolam also spoke about the dispute between the Mauritius Turf Club and the Gambling Regulatory Authority. For him, “the government wants to take away the organisation of races in order to benefit Jean-Michel Lee Shim.
He added that the Gambling Regulatory Authority is supposed to be independent, but it is not. With the Horse Racing Division, the government, according to him, wants to turn the regulator into an operator. “This is an attempt to nationalise the horse industry,” he added.
Arvin Boolell also intervened during that press conference saying that “taxpayers are paying for the policy of revenge” of the government. This same policy has so far, according to him, cost the State Rs 20 billion. “Today, we are paying the price of a fundamentally dishonest government. For instance, there was no reason to destroy the BAI group,” he said.
