Parliament: 53 People Still Missing Since 2019

These figures came from the Prime Minister in his reply to the  Private Notice Question of the Leader of the Opposition this morning. Pravind Jugnauth stated that since 2019, a total of 1525 persons have been reported missing at one point in time. 1448 of them were later localised successfully by the police. 24 were found dead. This leaves 53 persons still missing since 2019.

The Prime Minister also indicated that according to Passport and Immigration Office, 2224 foreign workers were reported missing since 2019. The majority are males. But this figure also included 98 females. Prime Minister Jugnauth also indicated that government is trying to find measures to this problem. He blamed employers who hire illegally foreign workers whose contract have already expired.

In the first part of his answer to the Private Notice Question, Pravind Jugnauth stated that an inquiry is initiated as soon as a person is reported missing in a police station. The police, he added, has established five categories of missing persons: children under 12; youngsters aged 12 to 18, seniors and handicapped, adults unsound of mind and adults with a sound mind.

He laid emphasis on the fact that special attention is given to the first four categories.
