An investigation for an exchange of information was opened at the headquarters of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) with South Africa and Madagascar following the seizure of a parcel that was in transit in Mauritius on Friday, December 31, 2021 on behalf of an express courier company. The package contained two books that were destined for a Malagasy woman. It concealed two rectangular parcels in which there were 1.55 kilos of methamphetamine, whose value is estimated at Rs 23 million.
Officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) of the Mauritius Revenue Authority had selected this parcel declared to contain books on December 31, 2021 to be scanned. Two abnormal rectangular shapes were detected inside the books in question. Upon verification, it was found that the two books contained two parcels wrapped in clear plastic containing methamphetamine. A field test confirmed this substance.
This evidence was seized and handed over to the ADSU of the airport for investigation. Its task is to elucidate the maneuver behind this package in transit on Mauritian soil and trace it back to its author.
