Once Again Mauritius Finds Itself Under Heavy Rainfalls

Must Read

Once again, Mother Nature has not been very lenient on this Wednesday 19th January 2022.  Indeed, Mauritius has been under heavy rainfall again this afternoon. A heavy rain warning for the south, southwest, and central plateau valid until 7 pm has been issued this afternoon by the Vacoas weather station.

Among the regions which have been affected by the heavy rains since the beginning of the year, Chemin-Grenier was a victim once again. Mrs. Bhunnoo, who has lived for a very long time in New Mosque Street, in Chemin-Grenier, spent almost half a day along with her family evacuating water from her house “Nou pe soufer bokou. Sak fwa ki lapli tonbe nou bizin tie delo” … “We cannot close our eyes during the night because we do not know what could happen to us during the night“. Almost a dozen of houses have been flooded by those rains.

Heavy rains have also affected the north region of the island. Due to this bad weather, the main road in the direction of Piton towards Rivière-du-Rempart was partially submerged by muddy water this afternoon. This situation made the traffic flow difficult due to the slippery road and both sides of the road were flooded with muddy water.

Even the Jawaharlal Nehru hospital in Rose-Belle was not spared by the floods this time. As explained by a patient present for her appointment, all of the sudden rainwater began to invade the waiting room near the hospital dispensary. Despite the efforts made by the cleaning agents to prevent the water from invading the waiting room, the water kept coming in. Because of this situation, the medical consultations have been disrupted.

In St Jean, Quatre-Bornes, a car was stuck in the middle of a flooded road next to St Jean Cemetery. In the car, there were 3 people, and one of the car occupants said that she saw death coming while their car was being trapped by the flow of heavy water coming down the road. They had to be rescued by the fire and rescue services of Quatre-Bornes fire station.
