Navin Ramgoolam: The Important Thing Is To Get This Government Out Of Office, Not Who Will Be Prime Minister

Must Read

Unveiling of a marble bust of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam by the Global Rainbow Foundation in Petit Raffray this afternoon. In his speech, Navin Ramoolam compared the way people voted in the 1950s and the way they vote today. In 1959, Gaëtan Duval and Narain Romriky Ramsamy were candidates in an election in Curepipe, but although the town of light had a majority of people from the ‘general population’, it was Romriky Ramsamy who was elected.

For the former Prime Minister, the important thing is to remove this government, not who will be the Prime Minister.

The leader of the Reds asked Mauritians to avoid thinking only about their personal assets, Rs 10,000 or take away. Navin was very hard on the current government, because according to him, “it is repression that reigns because people are not free to say what they want”.

The former Prime Minister argued that the same principle applies to voting. “Bizin konn vote. Ankor pe vot lor kominote ek caste ici a Moris,” he said, adding that one must vote for a candidate from a party that will contribute to progress.

Navin Ramgoolam pointed out that in the past, voters voted on principle. He went back to the time when Gaëtan Duval wanted to join the PTr before the proclamation of independence.

Referring to defectors and others, Navin Ramgoolam pointed out that some “kite li ale lott kote me ena pa koumsa” and according to him, that is loyalty. He took the example of Armoogum Parsuramen, who in 1995 did not abandon SAJ during the elections when the latter lost the elections.
