A 55-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman traveling on a motorcycle were seriously injured in a traffic accident in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 10. Their motorcycle was rear-ended by a car, which was traveling on Phoenix Highway near the Lolo Hypermarket. The couple was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Victoria Hospital in Candos.
At approximately 4:50 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, a team of police officers from the Phoenix Police Station responded to a crash report on the highway. A Haojue motorcycle was hit from behind by a Toyota car. The car was coming from Camp Fouquereaux and was heading towards Phoenix. The motorcyclist is a resident of Plaisance, Rose-Hill and his passenger was a resident of Albion Village.
The 29-year-old driver of the car, who lives on 16th Mile, Forest-Side, told police he was traveling in the middle of the highway at 90 kilometers per hour when he hit the back of the motorcycle. The driver and passenger were thrown to the asphalt. He said he stopped immediately to assist the injured. An ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) was requested to transport the two injured to the hospital in Candos.
At the time of this accident, the highway was wet. The driver of the car, who works for a food company, was given a breathalyzer test and a drug test, which were negative.
The driver of the car was arrested and brought to court in Curepipe on a provisional charge of causing bodily harm by carelessness. He was later released on a bail of Rs 20,000 and an IOU of Rs 200,000.
