A terrible accident occurred on Friday, August 5 on the Royal Road of Black River near Medina. A truck overtaking a motorcycle hit the two wheels. The motorcyclist and his passenger were seriously injured. The driver fled with his vehicle. A police operation set up shortly afterwards led to the arrest of the driver, at Casela Park where he had gone to make a delivery of animal feed. The passenger in the back of the motorcycle Jean Nicolas Christopher Veerapen, 35 years old and resident of Holy Cross did not survive his injuries.
The accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 5. The truck and the motorcycle were driving in the direction of Medina. The truck collided with the motorcycle as it passed another vehicle. The motorcyclist and his passenger were thrown from the vehicle. The driver of the truck, a 39-year-old man from Lallmatie, continued on his way.
In the meantime it was motorists who alerted the police and the Emergency Medical Service (Samu). Both men were transported to the Victoria Hospital in Candos with serious injuries. Nicolas Veerapen was pronounced dead. The 25-year-old driver of the motorcycle, who lives in Beaux-Songes, underwent surgery and was admitted to the intensive care unit. His prognosis is vital.
The driver of the truck, when questioned after his arrest, told investigators that he was unaware of having hit a motorcycle. He was taken into custody at the Bambous police station after being given a breathalyzer test. The test was negative. He was brought before the Bail and Remand Court the next day, Saturday, August 6, before being released on bail. Nicolas Veerapen died as a result of multiple injuries, as revealed by the autopsy.
An investigation was initiated at the level of the police station of Bambous to establish the exact circumstances of this accident.
