MOL (Mauritius) Ltd organised today, Tuesday 31 August 2021, a visit to the Mahébourg Espoir Educational Centre (MEEC), an educational centre for children from disadvantaged families on the South-East coast who are outside the school system. This was done in the presence of His Excellency Shuichiro Kawaguchi, Ambassador of Japan to Mauritius, Goro Yamashita, Director of MOL (Mauritius) Ltd, and Francis de La Haye, President of Mahébourg Espoir.
Education being one of its priorities, MOL (Mauritius) Ltd has partnered with the NGO Mahébourg Espoir, with the objective of creating a kindergarten to assist the families of Cité La Chaux, many of whom work in the fishing industry.
The Japanese ambassador took the opportunity to congratulate Mahébourg Espoir and MOL (Mauritius) Ltd for their involvement with the youth.
Mahébourg Espoir is actively involved with vulnerable communities in the South-East, and runs the MEEC for the benefit of teenagers outside the formal school system. “In December last year, we signed an agreement with Mahébourg Espoir to help the educational centre to accommodate more children, particularly through the creation of a kindergarten. We are providing financial support for the purchase of school materials, daily meals (breakfast and lunch), and daily transportation for the young beneficiaries of the programme,” explains Goro Yamashita, Director of MOL (Mauritius) Ltd.
Francis de la Haye, President of Mahébourg Espoir and former Admiral of the French Navy, explains that the association was born out of his desire to help families and young people from underprivileged backgrounds in the region, a little more than ten years ago: “Very quickly, our mission was to help destitute teenagers who had dropped out of the school system between the ages of 12 and 17. We also led a project to rehouse several families in the Cité “Tôles”, a very poor neighbourhood of La Chaux, and founded a Learning Corner for children aged 6 to 8, who had great difficulties at school, with their families and in society. Following the first confinement, we joined forces with Sarah Rougier-Lagane, a woman who was very involved with young children in the area and who wanted to create a kindergarten in the Cité La Chaux. It was through her that we got in touch with MOL (Mauritius) Ltd. I find this initiative of MOL (Mauritius) Ltd very noble and generous, and I salute their involvement in the field and their willingness to reach out to those who suffer. Their intention to make a long-term commitment is something rare enough to be highlighted, but it is what we need when working with young people and children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
MOL (Mauritius) Ltd continues its mission to vulnerable communities in the South East and Mauritius through other social and environmental projects.
