Minister Gobin And Consul General Of Spain Discuss Avenues Of Cooperation

The Consul General of Spain for Mauritius with residence in Cape Town, South Africa, Mr Jesús Silva, paid a courtesy call, yesterday in Port Louis, on the Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin.

Mr Silva was accompanied by the Honorary Consul of Spain in Mauritius, Mr Patrice Robert, and the Coordinator of the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Mauritius, Mr Ruben Cyril Payen.

In a statement, Mr Silva highlighted that the meeting with Minister Gobin was cordial and that discussions focused on the increasing Spanish interest in Mauritius, as well as on several avenues of cooperation between the two countries, mainly in the fields of tourism, fisheries and transport.

The Consul General indicated that, to date, Spanish stakeholders have invested around Rs 6 billion in two hotels in Mauritius, which resulted in the creation of some 500 jobs. He also reminded that a weekly flight from Spain to Mauritius is already in operation and expressed hope that more Spanish tourists visit our country.

Furthermore, Mr Silva underlined that the Spanish partnership with hotels in Mauritius can eventually contribute to increase the consumption of local products, thus helping Mauritian businesses to expand.

It is recalled that Mr Silva has been Ambassador of Spain in Venezuela from 2017 to 2020, and began his Spanish diplomatic career in 1990. He was born in Seville and graduated in Law in 1986. He speaks German, English and French, and has various Spanish as well as foreign decorations.
