Mauritius Celebrates Its Newest Centenarian

On Sunday 20 November 2022, family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs Bigwantee Jhoomuck. The Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Rajanah Dhaliah, was present at the event.

To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity offered to Mrs Bigwantee Jhoomuck a cheque of Rs 26,203; an electronic appliance; a bouquet of flower; the centenarian medal; and a certificate for her service. The National Solidarity Fund of the Ministry gave her a cheque of Rs 10,000. Gifts were also presented to her by the Senior Citizen Council.

Mrs Bigwantee Jhoomuck was born in the village of Rivière du Poste. She had six children, three sons and three daughters, of whom, three are alive. She has 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

To make ends meet, Mrs Jhoomuck used to rear cows until the age of 85 years old. She also participated in ‘Geet Gawai’ and was known for her dancing and singing.

Mrs Bigwantee Jhoomuck attributes her longevity to her vegetarian diet and her faith in God.
