International Yoga Day : Session At The High Commission Of India

In the context of the 8th International Yoga Day observed annually on 21 June, a yoga session was organised, Saturday at the High Commission of India in Ebène, in the presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, and the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mrs K. Nandini Singla.

The yoga session, an initiative of the Ministry in collaboration with the High Commission of India, aimed to promote yoga among the population and create awareness on its benefits. The theme retained for the International Yoga Day 2022 is “Yoga for Humanity.”

In a statement, Minister Jagutpal indicated that yoga contributes in promoting good health, both mentally and physically, and brings comfort and relief in one’s stressful life.

This event, he said, was an opportunity to stress on the importance of yoga among the public especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minister also highlighted the need for a healthy diet and physical exercises to keep fit in everyday life. At the level of the Ministry, yoga sessions are conducted in various regions by the Non-Communicable Diseases and Health Promotion Division, he said. He urged the population irrespective of their age group to engage in yoga activities regularly.

As for Mrs Singla, she stated that the United Nations has declared yoga as a vehicle of peace and prosperity in the world adding that the practice of yoga originates from India. Yoga, she said, has proven to be beneficial and has helped to build resilience and immunity amidst the pandemic.

She added that a Guardian Ring will be created on 21 June 2022 as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and that yoga will be practised in some 70 countries across the world including Mauritius. It is an occasion to reinforce the bilateral relations between Mauritius and India while highlighting the spiritual connection between the two countries, she said.
