After long hours of interrogation during the day of Monday, June 20, Jean Pierre Parisot, 51 years, Jean Daniel Orange, 40 years Genaro Yuan Bhutoo, 36 years, three fishermen of Mahébourg were arrested under a charge of participation in an illegal demonstration. The demonstration took place on May 21 at the Waterfront of Mahebourg to protest against the increase in fuel prices. The three fishermen were however allowed to return home on the orders of the assistant superintendent of police, Satiajev Callychurn. This Tuesday morning, June 21, they were brought before the court in Mahebourg on a provisional charge of participating in an illegal demonstration. As the police did not object to their release, they had to pay a bail of Rs 3,000 each and an IOU of Rs 25,000 for this purpose.

The three fishermen were summoned on Monday morning, June 20, for questioning at the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in Mahebourg. This was in relation to a demonstration at the Mahébourg waterfront. They were protesting against the increase in fuel prices on Saturday, May 21. The three fishermen, who were each assisted by a law officer, maintained their right to silence during their interrogation. Fishermen Parisot and Bhuttoo were identified by an inspector from the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) as having participated in the protest. The Orange fisherman was identified by a sergeant from the same unit. Lawyers for the three fishermen have filed a motion to have this charge dismissed. This motion will be debated on Monday, June 27.
