The Platform for Freedom of Expression is not giving up and is still challenging the amendments to the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Act.
At a press conference on Wednesday, December 15, lawyer Rama Valayden announced that a second rally is planned for January 29. According to him, it will be a different kind of rally, this time in the countryside. The rally will start “dan kavern Ali Baba dan nimero 8”, the Moka/Military Quarter constituency where the Prime Minister was elected. The place, adds the lawyer, which prevents citizens from enjoying their freedom. The details of this rally will be communicated later.
Rama Valayden also returned to the next activities of the Platform, including a complaint will be filed against the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) TV at the IBA. According to him, the authorities use the MBC to give a false and bad image of the members of the platform. Conferences will be held with national organizations and there will also be an inventory of the State of Rights on freedom of democracy in Mauritius.
Bruneau Laurette dwelt on some issues, including that these amendments want to prevent “whistle blowers” from coming to denounce irregularities.
He also wondered if we are not heading for a social crisis early next year. It will be a crisis in terms of freedom and social issues.
The national radio and television station was also criticized by Alain Malherbe and Percy Yip Tong. According to them, it is a propaganda box and they are even considering filing a complaint against the MBC to demand the refusal to pay the licence fee.
