“Harry Potter” TV Series To Be Released On HBO Max With An Entirely New Cast

Must Read

During Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation to the press and investors on April 12, it was announced that the “Harry Potter” TV series has officially been ordered at HBO Max. Another announcement was regarding HBO Max and Discovery+ to be combined in a single service called Max.

The announcement of the series based on JK Rowling’s hit book series leaked on April 3, though now confirmed details have been released.

Every season of the show will be set on the premise of one of the books in the franchise in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery, which says the show will be a “decade-long series”, but it will feature a completely new cast.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, said, “We are delighted to allow audiences to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and JK Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

Max will produce in partnership with Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television, while Rowling will serve as executive producer along with Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts. David Heyman is currently rumored to become the executive producer.

Rowling said, “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series.”

The announcement has put an end to a long-anticipation regarding the transition of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to television. In 2021, Variety, an American media company, reported (before Discovery acquired WarnerMedia) that the company was looking to produce a show based on “Harry Potter”.

The “Harry Potter” franchise has grown to be incredibly famous across various media worldwide. Rowling’s first book in the series, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (or “Sorcerer’s Stone” in the US) was originally published in 1997 and the final book of the series was “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” published in 2007.

Each book of the series was a bestseller and eight “Harry Potter” films have together earned over $7.7 billion at the box office worldwide. Additionally, there are films of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise along with theme parks, toys, and games, including the most recent “Hogwarts Legacy.” The hit Broadway show “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is a sequel to the book series.
