The accident happened at Avenue Victoria on Thursday evening. The 40-year-old was walking on the tracks at the time of the accident. As a result of the impact, he was thrown onto the road. Gilbert Sobee was reportedly homeless. He was staying in a night shelter in St Jean. Emergency services have confirmed his death. This is the fourth victim of our Metro service. The service was perturbed for a few hours.
According to some witnesses and the initial findings of the investigation, the principal concerned crossed in front of the streetcar heading towards Belle-Rose station from Quatre-Bornes central station. Firefighters and police are still on the scene. More on this later.
Following the accident, Metro Express Ltd (MEL) has issued a press communique to inform the public “that an accident occurred at Belle-Rose, 200 meters before Belle- Rose Station involving a person who was walking on the railway track while the light rail vehicle (LRV) was moving towards Port Louis, at around 19h15 on Thursday.
As per established protocols, the Emergency Services comprising of Police, Mauritius Fire & Rescue Services, SAMU were immediately informed and our Operations, Maintenance and Safety staff were present on site for assistance and co-ordination. The metro service has immediately interrupted, and a bus bridging service was immediately provided.
On arrival of the SAMU, the latter confirmed that the person involved in the accident had unfortunately passed away.
“MEL is collaborating fully with the Police, who is conducting an investigation, as per the normal procedure. “
