Fame And Flashdance Singer Irene Cara Dies At 63

The American singer and actress is best known for performing the title song of the 1980 film Fame, as well as co-writing and singing the hit Flashdance… What a Feeling, for which she won an Oscar and a Grammy. She won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1984 for the film “Flashdance”.

The singer was found dead at her home in Florida, her publicist announced on Twitter on Saturday 26 November.

“It is with deep sadness that I announce the death of Irene Cara (…) The cause of death is not yet known and we will inform you as soon as this information is available (…). The funeral date will be announced shortly and a memorial will be set up for her fans,” the statement said.

Irene Cara, who began her career in the 1970s as a soap opera actress, is best known for her role in the 1980 film Fame, in which she sang the song of the same name.

In 1984, the composer won the Oscar for Best Original Song for the song Flashdance… What a Feeling. In the film Flashdance, Jennifer Beals plays Alex Owen, a construction worker by day and a cabaret dancer by night.

Her latest album, Irene Cara Presents Hot Caramel, was released in April 2011.
