On April 9, Catholics around the world will celebrate Easter. In Mauritius, some families never deviate from certain traditions. This is the case for the Beeharry couple from Pointe-Aux-Sable, who will mark another happy event on this day.
Besides the religious aspect, Easter is also a time for family reunion. Alistair Beeharry and his wife Sarah have already been preparing for the event for a few days: “After the Sunday mass, the whole family will meet at my mother-in-law’s house in Anse-Jonchée. As is the tradition, each guest will come with something to eat or drink. Usually the first guests arrive around 11 am. The party will last until the early hours of the morning.”
Another tradition is the unavoidable tangue and pork: “Easter will not be the same if there is not a good tangue salmis on the table. The same goes for roast pork, which is one of my mom’s specialties,” says Sarah.
And as a celebration never comes alone, the couple will also take advantage of the presence of the whole family to seal their union: “We got married civilly on February 14, a few days before Lent. As a result, we could not celebrate the event as it should be. We will take advantage of the presence of the whole family on the occasion of Easter to seal our alliance,” explains Alistair.
