At the PMSD press conference this morning, Xavier-Luc Duval spoke about the increase in electricity rates. The increase will be from 19% to 29.5%. The opposition leader denounced the government’s wastefulness. This is why, he said, the regime has no choice but to heavily tax fuels. Xavier-Luc Duval maintains that the Mauritians are paying the price for the government’s largesse. The increase from 19% to 29% on the electricity tariff is “enormous“, said Xavier Duval. The opposition leader also referred to the Rs 3 billion that the government took from the BEC coffers in 2021. “Return this amount taken unfairly,” he said. Xavier-Luc Duval said the electricity tariff hike will have a snowball effect. “The effect on prices will be generalised,” he said.
