Shezaad Mohamed Fatadin, a 54-year-old driver’s helper living in Camp Belin N0 2, Vacoas, met a sad end on the afternoon of Thursday June 1. He was pinned against a door when the truck he was working on reversed inside the Winpro factory, opposite rue La Concorde in La Tour Koenig, Pointe aux Sables. Shezaad Fatadin is the 54th road accident victim so far this year.
The tragic accident occurred at around 3.45pm on Thursday June 1st. A Daf goods truck was reversing in the yard of the Winpro factory. The vehicle was driven by a 38-year-old man from Clairfonds N0 1, Phoenix. Accidentally, the truck crushed the stomach of Shezaad Fatadin, who was leaning against the factory’s secondary gate. Since the beginning of this year, 54 people have been killed in road accidents, compared with 39 on the same date in 2022.
The driver, working for the Euroline company, had to move the truck forward immediately, and with the help of the factory staff, the fifty-year-old was rushed to the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis. Dr. Appadoo arrived in the emergency department and sadly pronounced Shezaad Fatadin dead.
In the meantime, police officers from La Tour Koenig police station had gone to the scene of the accident to investigate the case of manslaughter. An autopsy was performed on the body of the Vacoas resident on the evening of Thursday June 1. Dr Ananda Sunnassee, Police Medical Officer, attributed the death to multiple injuries.
The truck driver was given an alcohol test, which proved negative. He was subsequently taken into custody at La Tour Koenig police station. On Friday morning, June 2, he was brought before the Port-Louis court on a provisional charge of manslaughter by imprudence. He was subsequently released on bail.
The news of this accident sent shockwaves through his family, friends and acquaintances. Shezaad Fatadin was married with one daughter. Shezaad Fatadin’s funeral took place on the evening of June 1st at 10.30 pm. After prayers at the Majid in Camp Belin, he was laid to rest in the Phoenix cemetery.
In addition, a 46-year-old man was the victim of a hit-and-run accident on Route Royale, Trou aux Biches at around 6.50 pm on Thursday June 1. The resident of this coastal village is life-threatening. He was placed in the intensive care unit of the northern hospital. On the morning of Friday June 2, the driver involved in the accident went to the Trou aux Biches police station to report the accident.
The 36-year-old driver, who lives in Cap Malheureux, explained that he had become frightened, which was why he had not stopped after the accident.
The victim was standing at the side of the road near the Mexico snack bar when he was mowed down by a car that had not stopped. The 40-year-old was bleeding profusely when he was found unconscious on the left-hand side of the road, before being taken to hospital in a Service d’Aide Médicale ambulance.
