Must Read

Yesterday morning, commented largely the report of the Magistrate, Vidya Mungroo-Jugurnath. Soon after, the DPP office issued a statement to clarify his position. Then, it was the Avengers, the group of lawyers, to comment about the whole situation. Late in the afternoon, all the Opposition members of Parliament met the press to explain their stand about the whole affair.

Attorney General: The investigations are being prejudiced, says Maneesh Gobin

The Attorney General faced the press this morning. He said he is concerned that the publication of the report of the Magistrate, Vidya Mungroo-Jugurnath in the press will obstruct the police investigation. “The public wants a trial. They want justice. But the investigation should not be prejudiced,” he said. He refused to comment on the content of the report of the Magistrate, who presided over the Judicial Inquiry into the murder of Soopramanien Kistnen.

For him, justice must be done. But he insisted that it should be in court and not in the media. He wondered if the content published in the media was indeed the report of the Magistrate. For him, the investigation s of both the police and ICAC must succeed. However, he stated that the fact that the report of a Judicial Inquiry is in the public domain is serious and disturbing.

The DPP’s office will not allow itself to be intimidated…

The DPP office issued a statement on Monday afternoon in response to that of the Attorney General’s yesterday.  Maneesh Gobin indicated that he would ask the police to investigate how the report of Magistrate Mungroo-Jugurnath on the death of Soopramanien Kistnen was leaked to the press, even though the document was given to the DPP’s office. The latter reacted promptly. In his statement, Satyajit Boolell said that his office would not allow itself to be intimidated in yet another attempt to curtail its independence and fearlessness to uphold the Rule of Law in our democratic society. The DPP maintains that the way his officers are to perform their duties, particularly in relation to their interactions with the Police, has been the subject of severe attacks by Maneesh Gobin. Commenting on the release of the document, Satyajit Boolell refuted Maneesh Gobin’s insinuations that an offence had been committed by his officers or that they would face a police investigation or disciplinary actions. He recalled that after receiving the document, he had ordered that a new investigation be initiated, as recommended by the Magistrate. Satyajit Boolell insists that, for the time being, his office is concentrating on the investigation and expects it to be completed as soon as possible to bring justice to the deceased.

Opposition MPs

Opposition parties announce joint actions outside Parliament

The collaboration between the Opposition parties is growing. This Monday, in a press conference, after a meeting of all the elected representatives of the Opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval confirmed that the Kistnen affair will be the focus of the parliamentary session on Tuesday. He also announced several actions by the four formations at the level of the Parliament. But in an unprecedented move, the PMSD, PTr, MMM and RM have decided to take joint actions outside of Parliament. “This is an unanimous decision,” said Xavier-Luc Duval. He added that in the face of the danger facing democracy, the four Opposition parties have decided to put all other considerations aside and work as one to thwart the government’s malicious actions.
