Darren The Activist: I Will Go Into Politics If…

Must Read

Dominique Seedeeal, known as Darren the activist, has been in the spotlight for the past few weeks. Today, this committed citizen answers questions from Le Matinal Media.

How did you become an activist?

I had a difficult childhood where I grew up in a shelter. Thus, I was confronted with realities, which allowed me to understand the distress. At a very young age, I understood the importance of reaching out to others.

What were your first civic commitments?

I started by showing people how to save money and invest in agriculture so that they could make a living from their production. I became more involved during the first containment.

Why?

In my opinion, the state could have done a better job of making sure that the poor had enough to eat during the lockdown. I made a personal commitment to distribute food to the most vulnerable.

How did you become involved in the protests against price increases that began on April 20?

Knowing my social commitment, the residents called on me. I went there to peacefully support the movement. The rest, everyone knows it. There was my arrest, my release on parole and other setbacks with the police.

Do you really think that these demonstrations have the power to bring down prices?

These demonstrations have first of all had the power to make the suffering of Mauritians heard in the face of rising prices. Concretely, on my own behalf, I have worked on many measures that can help the State to fill its coffers without touching the pockets of the majority of Mauritians. I am therefore ready to submit my recommendations to the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth.

Do you feel persecuted?

Some people do not like my stance. I know that I am in the crosshairs. From now on, all pretexts will be good to put me in jail. I take this opportunity once again to say that I have nothing against the government. I am fighting against a system that no longer works.

Do you ride for a political party as some rumors claim?

Not at all. I am apolitical. If there are politicians around me, it is mainly because they represent me legally.

Are you interested in getting into politics?

I will enter politics if a party rises up to defend the interests of the people.

Is there a party that corresponds to your ideals?

For the moment, none has yet proven itself.
