A drunk driver on a motorcycle crashed head-on into a tree on the Royal Road in Batimarais, Rivière des Anguilles late Monday afternoon, April 17. His passenger, 30 years old, fractured his left arm during this accident. Admitted to the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle, his condition is considered very serious. The driver of the motorcycle tested positive for alcohol. He had 101 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.
It was around 4pm on the afternoon of Monday, April 17 that this terrible accident occurred. An orange Haojue motorcycle was driving on the Royal Road of Batimarais near a bridge. At a certain point, the driver skidded off the road and crashed into a tree. The impact was so violent that the two-wheeled vehicle was stuck in the root of a tree. The passenger in the rump of the motorcycle living in St. Aubin was lying on his back right next to the motorcycle on the left side of this road, next to a river facing the Benares castle. Another man identified himself as a 27 year old ploughman and resident of Chateau Benares, the driver of the motorcycle.
Elements of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service, as well as an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (Samu) were dispatched to the scene of the accident. The passenger was transported to the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle on the Samu ambulance. The driver of the motorcycle was taken to Souillac Hospital before being transferred to Rose-Belle Hospital after being treated.
He was given an alcohol test by an Emergency Response Service officer which tested positive. He had 101 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. The motorcycle was towed to the Eel River Police Station. After his medical treatment the driver of the motorcycle was allowed to leave. However, he was placed in a drunk tank at the police station of Rivière des Anguilles.
