The outbreak of COVID-19 in China due to the circulation of the BF.7 sub-variant has prompted several countries to strengthen their health measures.  The decision was made at the High-Level Committee meeting on COVID-19 on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Several stakeholders from various ministries, including the Ministry of Health, participated in this meeting chaired by the Prime Minister. The situation of the pandemic worldwide and in Mauritius was reviewed.

According to the Mauritian authorities, the country does not need to impose health restrictions since the majority of its population is already vaccinated against COVID-19 and has reached herd immunity.

The decision of the Chinese authorities to abolish the control measures against Covid-19 has raised concerns around the world about the risk of new variants of the virus.
