Covid-19 : 1 Death On Monday, BA.4 And BA.5 Sub-Variants Reach Mauritius

Must Read

This week’s death toll will not be zero like the previous week. However, the daily contamination rates are still decreasing. On the other hand, the Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 have already reached Mauritians.

This Monday, the New ENT hospital deplores the death of a septuagenarian resident of Curepipe. The 73-year-old woman was admitted to the Treatment Centre in Vacoas, following a deterioration of her health after contracting Covid 19. In addition, the New ENT released two patients who were cured on this day. The regional hospitals have 3 admissions and 1 cured person released.  Vaccination progress is recorded at 1,008,798 for the first dose, 975,656 for the second and 632,280 for Booster Dose 1.

BA.4 and BA.5 get all the attention

Covid 19 news is dominated by the discovery of the BA.4 sub-variant in 3 Mauritians, who have returned from South Africa with a positive status for Covid 19. These 3 people are currently in isolation and the symptoms they are showing are not considered as worrying. This is part of the results of the sequencing of 200 samples which the Ministry of Health expects to be available by 17 May. A case of the BA.5 variant was sequenced in a person who returned from Mauritius at the end of April.

These two sub-variants are attracting the attention of scientists, not because of the severity or dangerousness of the symptoms but because of the speed of its spread. In South Africa, BA.4 is at the origin of the new wave of Covid 19 while BA.5 is also circulating in South Africa. This sub-variant is also well established in Botswana, Belgium, Denmark, France, Switzerland, the UK and the USA.

The BA.5 sub-variant has been detected in Austria, France, Germany, Portugal, UK, USA, and Hong Kong. It was also detected on Reunion Island in a Mauritian passenger from Mauritius in late April. He was positive for Covid 19.

These Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 are considered to be more contagious than the other Omicron sub-variants. But even if they are not more dangerous, they can cause a rapid rise. Vigilance advised!
