Collision Between Two Vehicles, Both Drivers Flee

Two 18-year-olds were seriously injured in an accident in the early hours of Sunday morning, 15 May after the collision of two cars. The cars were then abandoned by their respective drivers on the Royal Road in La Marie, Vacoas. One of the two injured is a hotel employee and resident of Plaine-Magnien and was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Victoria Hospital in Candos. His condition is considered serious.

It was around 5am on Sunday 15 May that a team of Vacoas police officers, led by Sergeant Bissonauth, went to the Royal Road in La Marie where a Toyota taxi and an oncoming Hyundai car collided. The blue Hyundai was travelling from Vacoas towards La Marie. Both drivers had to abandon their vehicles on the road immediately before fleeing.

The two occupants in the Hyundai, both 18 years old, were seriously injured. One of the occupants is a hotel employee and lives in Plaine-Magnien while the second lives in La Marie, Vacoas. The injured were taken to Victoria Hospital in an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service. Both vehicles were towed to the Vacoas police station.

At around 6pm on Sunday 15 May, a 21-year-old, a driver’s helper from Plaine-Magnien, showed up at the Vacoas police station, accompanied by his lawyer to inform that he was the one driving the Hyundai. He asserted his right to remain silent. An investigation has been launched to shed light on the exact circumstances of this accident.

In addition, an octogenarian was injured in a road accident in the afternoon of Sunday 15 May. The resident of the capital was hit by a scooter on the Royal Road in Mahebourg. The driver of the scooter, a 27-year-old woman, and her passenger, both residents of Beau-Vallon, Mahebourg, were seriously injured. They were taken to the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle in an ambulance. The 83-year-old Portlouisian was taken to the hospital by volunteers and he was able to return home after receiving treatment.
