The Congress of Independent Trade Union (CITU) is calling on Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth to introduce Covid Leave so that sick leave, annual leave and Vacation Leaves are not exhausted.
In a letter to the head of government, the president and secretary of CITU, including Radhakrishna Sadien and Beejaye Baumy, point out that Covid-19 and its variants have a negative impact on the lives of the population. Not everyone, they say, has the financial means to buy medicine when they are isolated at home.
“Not all families can avail themselves of the facilities needed at home nor do they have the appropriate resources to buy medicines for the members of their families, who are infected. This definitely adds to the burden of families who already facing difficulties with the increasing prices of goods and services,” write CITU leaders. They say they have already raised the issue with Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy during the last tripartite consultations. We are therefore making an appeal to you to consider in all fairness and as a means of burden sharing the grant of Covid Leave to all workers who have been hospitalized or have to self-isolate as a result of Covid-19,” the CITU leaders say.
