Prime minister Jugnauth said that the new British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, was going to raise the issue in the British Parliament on Thursday. Pravind Jugnauth has referred to his discussion with the former British PM, Liz Truss in a statement to Parliament on Thursday. According to him, Mauritius and British government are in discussion to reach an agreement on the occupation of the Chagos Archipelago. The agreement, if reached, will ensure the existence of the military base in Diego Garcia. This is what the Prime Minister stated in Parliament this Thursday, after the Private Notice Question. Pravind Jugnauth added that both parties have agreed that the existence of the military base in Diego Garcia will not be jeopardised as it provides security for the area. Mauritius and Great Britain also agreed to strengthen their cooperation on several bilateral issues and that the US and India will be kept informed of progress. Pravind Jugnauth revealed to the House the discussions he had had with former British Prime Minister, Liz Truss on Mauritius’ claim to sovereignty over the Chagos.
