The social and political activist appeared before the Moka court on Thursday where the debates on his bail application continued. The exercise will continue this Friday. The proceedings will end. This was confirmed by Shakeel Mohamed, the activist’s lawyer. He added that he will call Bruneau Laurette to the stand on Friday. In the meantime, the activist has been returned to Melrose prison. After the hearing, Me Shakeel Mohamed spoke to journalists. He said that the police cannot base their decision to deprive someone of their freedom on mere fear. For him, concrete elements are needed. He also questioned the fact that ‘Mr Franklin’ came, on his own, to say that he never put drugs in Bruneau Laurette’s car. This, he ironised, when Bruneau Laurette has never made such accusations.
It is to be reminded that Bruneau Laurette has been in detention for nearly three months. He faces three provisional charges, including possession of hashish worth an estimated Rs 231 million, money laundering and possession of firearms.
