The bodies of a loving couple who were having an extramarital affair were recovered on Sunday afternoon, January 16, from a lake near the entrance to La Vanille Crocodile Park in Eel River. Mitra Bungaroo, 34 years old known as Padminee lived in Batimarais, Rivière des Anguilles and Muthada Pottayya, also known as Roddy aged 35 years from Surinam. They both worked as nurses at the Souillac hospital. The autopsy attributed the cause of death of these two victims to asphyxiation due to drowning.
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Rose-Belle, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Sailesh Kumar Omrawoo, under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Francois Nicole, was assigned to the investigation to determine the circumstances of this tragedy. The CID does not rule out any hypothesis in this case.
It was around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, January 16 that a team of police officers from the police station of Rivière des Anguilles went to the Crocodile Park of this village following a report of an alleged case of drowning. An unoccupied Toyota car with several cans of beer inside was parked since the day before at the entrance of this park. The assistance of a sniffer dog was requested and a search was organized. In the meantime, the identity of the owner was known and the police contacted his relatives. On the dashboard of the car was a card with the inscription Souillac Hospital Staff.
The body of Muthada Pottayya, which was visible and floating in the water, was the first to be recovered by elements of the National Coast Guard. The latter were later called to weld this lake. The body of Mitra Bungaroo was found at the bottom of this muddy lake at around 5:40 pm. The two bodies were later transported to the morgue of the Victoria Hospital in Candos for autopsy. The morgue attributed the cause of death of the two nurses to asphyxiation due to drowning.
Mitra Bungaroo was single. She was having an extramarital affair with Muthada Pottayya. The latter was married and without children. He was separated from his wife and was in the process of divorce. At the same time, he would have an affair with another woman of 21 years who is seven months pregnant. It is this woman, a resident of Souillac, who reported his disappearance to the local police station at about 12:10 p.m. on Sunday, January 16. Mathuda Pottayya, who had gone to work for the shift from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, had not been seen since.
