Bishop Piat Encourages Catholics To Live Christmas Eve, Each At Home, But All In Communion

Must Read

For the second year in a row, Catholics will celebrate Christmas in a particular context with the Coronavirus pandemic that has already claimed many victims on our territory.

In order to avoid large gatherings and to participate in the national effort to slow down the spread of the virus, Cardinal Piat proposes that this year the faithful celebrate Christmas Eve at home, with their families.

a. He explains this initiative to the faithful in a short video that will be posted on the diocesan Facebook page on Sunday, December 19.

Living the vigil as a family is also a symbol: our home becomes a crib where we await and celebrate the coming of the Savior.

b. Father Gerard Sullivan has prepared a video to explain very simply how to live the vigil at home. This video is available on the Facebook page of the Diocese of Port Louis on Monday, December 20.

In order for Catholics to live this vigil in communion, Cardinal Piat invites them to join him on MBC on December 24 at 8:30 pm.

c. The bishop will celebrate the Mass which will be broadcast on television and social networks.

Parishes will offer Christmas Eve parties outside the churches with groups of up to 50 people, with the utmost respect for health protocols.

d. The times and locations of the various celebrations can be found on the parishes’ Facebook page.

Christmas Eve

How to live Christmas in the context of a pandemic?

Cardinal Maurice E. Piat situates the meaning of Christmas in the difficult context in which we live: “How can we live a merry Christmas at a time when Covid-19 continues to take its toll? (…). In this climate of fear and apprehension, it is all our daily life that is upset (…) In the midst of all this distress, Christmas can still bring us joy and hope! Let us remember that to celebrate Christmas is to celebrate the God who is with us, in all circumstances, a God who is close to us, who comes to meet us on our way, where we are with our trials, our fears, our anxieties”.

Extract from the Christmas message of Cardinal Piat which will be sent to the editorial offices on December 21.
