Bernard Charles : A Mauritian Pastry Chef On TF1

Production manager for the Bateel International LLC group, Bernard Charles was featured in a report on dates broadcast on June 30 in the TF1 evening news. But, who is this Mauritian?

Bernard Charles has been juggling with sugars, creams, and chocolate for 32 years.

This passion has been nourished since he was very young: “ I loved helping my mother in the kitchen. After my studies, I took cooking and pastry classes before joining the pastry brigade at PLM Azur in Mont Choisy. I later worked in two other Mauritian hotels.”

In 2002, he left Mauritius for Dubai : “ I worked there for One & Only Royal Mirage. Then I was at Barbarde for the Sandy Lane Hotel. After that, I went back to Dubai this time as a production manager for the Bateel International LLC group which operates luxury cafes and boutiques around the world. I lead a team of over 50 people.”

Specializing in chocolate, Bernard has also participated in several competitions: “It was in Dubai that I discovered pastry competitions. I won some 25 medals and more than 50 as a team. I will not hide that I am particularly proud of this.”

When asked how he ended up in the 8 o’clock news on TF1, he explains: “ The theme of the report was dates in the United Arab Emirates.  The journalist was looking for someone who knew the date and who is in the business. My profile interested him because Bateel is the number one luxury date producer in the region. On the recommendation of a colleague, I agreed to participate in the report.”
