Unhappy about his separation from his wife, this Bangladeshi worker in an aluminium works company stabbed his ex, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi woman, several times in broad daylight on the Route Royale de L’Amitié, Rivière du Rempart. This happened on the morning of Wednesday 26 July. On the same day, the suspect, Md Jahangir Alam, 35, and Navin Bundhoo, 41, who is believed to be his accomplice, were arrested. They both live in the village of Pavillon, Cap Malheureux. On the morning of Thursday 27 July, the two men were brought before the Pamplemousses court on a provisional charge of attempted murder. While Md Jahangir Alam was held in police custody until 3 August, his accomplice was released on bail of Rs 14,000 and an IOU of Rs 15,000.  His next court appearance is scheduled for 3 April 2024.

Images of the bloody attack are being shared on social networks. The suspect is seen hiding in a courtyard waiting for the victim to go to work before attacking her violently with a knife. The suspect fled when passers-by came to the victim’s rescue. Navin Bundhoo is believed to be his accomplice, who was waiting for him in a grey Toyota. The victim, who was bleeding profusely, was escorted back to his dormitory a few metres away before being taken care of by Emergency Medical Service ambulance staff and taken to the northern hospital.

The two Bangladeshis are married and have been living apart for a year. MD Jahangir Alam’s work permit, which was renewed on 28 March this year, expires on 27 March 2025. The two suspects were arrested on Wednesday 26 July during an operation conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division in Piton and the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit.
