The MSM took more than a week to take a stand about the Supreme Court ruling against Navin Ramgoolam. In a press conference this afternoon, at Sun Trust Building, Minister Avinash Teeluck first went back over the Supreme Court’s decision. He explained that the Labour Party leader will have to face a new trial before the Intermediate Court. For him, this decision has very serious implications for the Reds. “We will see what the Intermediate Court says. But the Labour Party is currently in survival mode. Its existence is threatened,” he said. Minister Avinash Teeluck also wondered what Paul Bérenger will now decide on the alliance wanted with Labour Party. “Why doesn’t he ask Ramgoolam to seek a speedy trial?”
According to Avinash Teeluck, there is great turbulence in the Labour Party, where Navin Ramgoolam’s leadership is being questioned. Some members of his party are calling for his head.
Avinash Teeluck believes that the “complex situation” in which Navin Ramgoolam finds himself also weakens the other Opposition parties, who wanted to conclude an alliance with Navin Ramgoolam’s party at all costs in view of the next legislative elections.
“In any case, this will have repercussions on the alliance,” he said.
Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah and Sudhir Maudhoo also spoke during the press conference. She spoke about the drug issues and recalled the MSM government’s fight against the drug mafias. According to her, the MSM is doing everything to break the back of the drug mafias. She also talked about the law, which makes provision to test a driver to check if he is under the influence of drugs. She appealed to journalists not to trivialize big drug seizures.
